This may come as a surprise, but when I’m in the UK, one of my favorite things to do does not involve seeing Big Ben or the London Eye (not that these landmarks aren’t fantastic). No, I’d rather traverse the UK’s 200,000 miles of road. Why, you may ask? It’s simple.
The UK has some of the most picturesque roads in the world. Not only that, but there’s plenty of breathtaking stops along the way you won’t want to miss.
With the summer season right around the corner — the first official day being June 20th — I thought I’d share some of my favorite road trip destinations for those living in or thinking of visiting the UK.
1. The Cotswolds
Nothing says “you’re in England” quite like the Cotswolds. With miles upon miles of scenic countryside, scattered with quaint villages and winding country lanes, the Cotswolds is a must for those looking to explore.
I recommend beginning your stop at the Cotswolds in Chipping Campden (which is towards the north) to Bath (the southern tip). This will allow you to visit all of the majestic villages in between and enjoy gothic churches, pubs, and other curiosities.
2. Land of the Lakes
Whenever I think about the most picturesque drives in the UK, my mind immediately goes to Wordsworth country; home to some of the most awe-inspiring lakes and villages in the world.
Begin your adventure by making a pit stop at Lake District National Park — where you’ll find the largest lake in England and a resort that looks like it came straight from a post care. Finally, you can visit gorgeous lakeside villages in Grasmere — which is where William Wordworth’s famous Dove Cottage is located — and Ambleside.
3. North York Moors National Park
Care to stay a night in a village bed and breakfast? Want to take in winding streams, dense forests and expansive moorland? Then you’ll want to make a road trip stop at North York Moors National Park.
Where else can you see grazing sheep and drystone walls — located in the market town of Hemsley — along with coastal views and seaside villages — in Grosmont and Goathland — all in the same day?
4. Atlantic Highway
Referred to as the A39, Atlantic Highway is one of the longest stretches of road in South West England. Driving from Falmouth to Bath (or vice versa) you’ll be able to take in picturesque mountains and coastal vistas that are truly a feast for the eyes.
Along the way, I recommend stopping at the Cornish seaside resort, located in the north coast town of Newquay. Or you can simply choose to keep driving; with incredible views of the Atlantic ocean, I wouldn’t blame you.
5. North Coast 500
The next time you’re in Scotland, I recommend taking a trip down this scenic route. With some of the best landmarks and vistas in the Highlands — including ancient castles and sandy beaches — you won’t be disappointed.
When it comes to places to stop along the route itself, Inverness Castle is, by far, a must-see attraction. However, you also have many idyllic villages and towns to visit for some good eats, friendly locals, and affordable lodging.
